Meaningful Stewardship and Joyful Giving Workshop

Youth Chaplain Training

Chaplain Trainings are small working conferences designed and facilitated by the UUA Youth Office for youth and advisors to gain skills needed to effectively listen to, affirm, and emotionally support conferees at youth events. Successful participants may apply to be a PNWD Youth Chaplain.

This 15-hour long training will be held at Edmonds UU Church (WA) from Friday, January 27, 6 p.m. through Sunday, January 29, 1:00 p.m.

Presenter: Rev. Sarah Schurr, the PNWD Developmental Outreach minister, currently serves congregations in Fairbanks, Juneau and in her home city Portland. She also serves as consultant to the DA planning team in Alaska.

Summary: How do you respond to challenges in your congregation that are more than merely technical fixes, but require the whole culture to shift? How do you avoid getting marginalized, diverted, attacked, or seduced as you exercise leadership? This webinar offers some basic insights drawn from the work of Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky on Adaptive Leadership.

Presenter: The Rev. Carmen McDowell is minister of Cascade Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Wenatchee, WA. She earned her master's of divinity from Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry; she received her master's of nonprofit management from Regis University. She is passionate about supporting ethical, centered leadership.

Summary: This webinar will cover the characteristics of a good sermon and common mistakes made by the beginning preacher. Rev. Dr. Sewell will also suggest steps to take in preparing a sermon.

Facilitator: The Rev. Dr. Marilyn Sewell is an accomplished Unitarian Universalist minister, writer, activist, and spiritual leader. She retired from parish ministry in 2009, after serving 17 years as the Senior Minister of the First Unitarian Church of Portland, Oregon, and was named Minister Emerita.

Summary: This three-part series is for ministers or lay members who have been charged by their minister or governing board to research, establish, and/or strengthen a volunteer pastoral care/visitation program. Participation in all three workshops is encouraged but not required.

Part One: Jan 19, 2012 7 PM -Structuring Pastoral Associate/Lay Ministry Programs-What needs are served by these programs? How do they work? How is being a Pastoral Associate or Lay Minister different than being a minister, counselor, or friend? How does confidentiality work? An introduction to the basics.

Part Two: Feb 9, 2012 7 PM -Structuring Pastoral Associate/Lay Ministry Programs-A continuation and deeper discussion of the above topics.

Part Three: Mar 8, 2012, 7 PM -The Art of Spiritual Listening-

A pastoral skills workshop focused on spiritual listening.

Facilitator: Rev. Stephen Ames’ experience includes co-directing introductory and specialized Lay Ministry trainings for 70-90 participants from over 20 congregations in the Mass Bay District and establishing a Pastoral Associates program at The UU Church in Eugene.

The GOALS for participants in the RE ADMINISTRATION training are:

• To recognize the scope of administrative duties in each participant’s own situation;

• To become more aware of the components of the administration of religious education programs;

• To recognize that in a congregation setting these are often shared responsibilities;

• To recognize and acknowledge the various individuals and entities who share these duties and responsibilities and to build skills in developing relationships and alliances;

• To become aware of new techniques for information storage and retrieval and decision-making.

Among the subjects the training will explore are:

• Definition of the vision, mission, and goals of the RE Committee and of clear responsibilities for the DRE;

• Lines of authority, responsibility and communication within the congregation;

• Communication with the Board, committees, and other staff members as well as the congregation;

• Preparation of appropriate, accurate, persuasive, and effective reports and budgets;

• How to create win-win situations;

• Time management;

• Personality and leadership style;

• Feedback and support;

• Resources for information and encouragement!

Summary: Stewardship Team members that attended the Jan 21 Stewardship on-site workshop in Eugene will discuss the process of implementation of ideas learned from their on-site training and receive coaching from Mary regarding their questions.

Facilitator: Mary Gleason joined UUA Congregational Stewardship Services in 2007. Since then, Mary has served over two dozen congregations and several UU-affiliated organizations. In 2006, Mary established a consulting practice working exclusively with non-profit organizations focusing on strategic planning, governance, facilitation and fundraising. Mary has served the non-profit community for over 25 years.

Summary: All adults working with youth face a continuous set of choices about appropriate boundaries. Is it okay to text a youth? Can I initiate a hug? What about a ride home from youth group? The challenges are endless, and sometimes not obvious. Nancy Combs-Morgan, regional youth director for the Heartland District, will join us to present both guidelines and specific examples to help you navigate this path.

Facilitator: Anne-Marie Davidson has served the PNWD as the Con Consultant and has also been a youth group adviser for eight years, both in Tacoma and Port Townsend.
