Addiction is more common than we may think among our youth and their families. Recognize your own biases about addiction, learn to recognize clues that a youth is concerned about addiction, get some ideas of how to listen and what to do for youth who have addictions or have loved ones with addictions, consider how our UU values inform our actions, and gain some techniques, tips, and resources to help youth, including during times of crisis.

October 23, 2014 First Session: Setting Up Your Program. We will review some of the major questions and concepts you will want to consider in setting up a lay pastoral program. This will include clarity on how it fits with your congregation’s mission and other care programs, spiritual and theological foundations, who it reports to, what to call it, making the program visible, and a few other important questions!
November 20, 2014 Second Session: Ministry of Presence. How does lay pastoral ministry differ from social work or therapeutic context? What is the ministry of presence, and what skills are required?
December 18, 2014 Third Session: Considerations for Managing Your Program. This session will speak to issues of record keeping, legal and ethical practices and boundaries, provision of resources and referrals, on-going education and training and care of the lay pastoral team.
