2010 District Assembly
Workshops
The theme of the 2010 District Assembly’ “Let Us Shine” was chosen by this year’s planning team because we believe that our Unitarian Universalist faith is a beacon of love and hope for ourselves and for the world. We want to walk proudly out into the world shining the message that our lives matter and that what we do makes a difference. Our team thought an inspiring theme was particularly important for these difficult times. To shine our light on love and healing, we celebrate the joy in multigenerational life and chose Bill Harley as our keynote speaker and family concert presenter.
To shine our light on hope, we chose workshops to support our belief that involvement in our religious communities is an important part of living our values and doing something to make the world a better place. And to best shine our message to the world, we must have prophetic or change-leading congregational leadership.
Our workshops support these themes with particular emphasis on Leadership Development, in three primary areas of focus:
- Congregational Leadership – technical skills and “frame-bending” adaptive change
- Spiritual Growth – congregational and personal spiritual discovery, practice and commitment
- Faith in Action – social justice and community outreach / evangelism (including growth of Unitarian Universalism in reach and impact)
In each of these areas we recognized the need to promote the technical skills new and emerging leaders must master to effectively manage congregations, as well as the adaptive challenges that experienced leaders must navigate if congregations are to thrive in a dynamic and changing world. We wanted our workshops to have a multigenerational appeal; to deepen the understanding and practice of personal and collective leadership in our congregations; and to increase the understanding of the crucial role of the congregation in leadership of the larger community. Workshops designed with special multigenerational appeal are indicated in the listings, but all workshops are open to interested youth.
Rev. Peter Morales, new UUA President, will present a workshop on Saturday entitled "A Religion for Our Time". He will be joined by Rev. Elizabeth Greene, our district's representative on the UUA Board of Trustees, and the Board of Directors of the Pacific Northwest District. Peter will also meet with congregation presidents on Saturday and deliver the sermon at the Sunday morning worship service.
