Youth Program, Grades 7-12

Youth will be given a new and exciting opportunity to “shine their light” at this year’s District Assembly. Programming for this age group takes on an entirely new look with youth being fully integrated into the life of the assembly. Youth will have ample opportunities to grow in their understanding of our faith as well as develop leadership skills to bring back to their congregations as they attend the stirring opening ceremonies and banner parade, enjoy the humor and wisdom of keynote speaker Bill Harley, worship with others, and participate alongside adults in workshops of their choice, one of which will be co-led by a team of youth and young-adults.

The workshop descriptions make note of those that were intentionally planned to include youth. However, all workshops are open to anyone who is interested and youth are encouraged to explore widely. During the Saturday Workshop Session 3, there will be a facilitated gathering of youth for conversation and reflection. Youth will set the agenda with Bill Fry and Barrie Oukes, youth advisers from East Shore Unitarian Church , facilitating the conversation.  However, all youth who are still in high school must attend DA with a parent or sponsor who will be responsible for them outside those few specific times.

Children's Program, Grades 1-6

Elementary school age children, too, will have an exciting program ready and awaiting them. But here we also see changes. For the first time, some children may choose to leave the children’s program with a parent to attend a workshop designed to include them (see workshop descriptions) and rejoin their own program after the workshop. Multigenerational Morning Song during Session #1 and/or Process Art as Transformative Spiritual Exploration during Sessions #2 and #3 are open to children.

The children’s program will include an opening chalice circle, community-building games, and a variety of activities to explore the theme, “It Matters What We Do.” A Treasure Hunt around the hotel will be part of the afternoon fun. A closing circle/worship will end the day just before children meet their parents to attend the late afternoon Bill Harley concert together. All meals will be eaten with parents, though a substantial snack for children in the program is planned prior to the concert. Childcare will also be available during the Sunday morning worship service.

Toddlers and Preschoolers, Ages 1-5 & Kindergarten

Loving childcare by experienced caretakers will be available for the younger set in a suite on the 10 th floor of the hotel during the program day on Saturday, as well as during the worship service on Sunday. Books, toys, simple crafts, and music will be available for the children’s enjoyment. A separate bedroom is part of the suite and provides a quiet spot for napping and/or just getting away from the bustle of the group should a child need that. Parents leaving children in this room must stay at the hotel or very nearby so that they can be easily reached should their child need them.
